PYRAMID SELLING?

THIS is the mystery landmark tourist attraction proposed for Poole - a giant sundial called the Solar Pyramid.

Today the Daily Echo can reveal details of the enormous structure, which has been called the world's largest timepiece and the United Kingdom's largest artwork.

Originally proposed for a Derbyshire town and described as the most exciting "art meets science" project in the UK, its size for Poole is unconfirmed.

But the three polished steel wings could stretch 40-45 metres into the sky, casting a shadow across the 65-metre piazza, with the potential to attract 400,000 visitors a year.

The Borough of Poole has been approached by a private company eager to bring the world class attraction to the town, and has identified its waterside Harbourside Park (Baiter) as a potential location.

However the first reaction of Baiter resident and Parkstone Bay Association chairman David Howard was: "Over our dead bodies. I think residents will be rioting over this."

He said: "To even consider placing such an attraction' adjacent to a densely-populated residential area immediately bordering this park, is an act of irresponsibility."

It would use up most of our open space, cause traffic chaos and be an engineering nightmare to build on reclaimed land, he said.

"It has the smell of Dolphin Quays about it which started the same way - excluding the public, in smoke-filled rooms," he said.

Designed by leading engineers, astronomers and artists, the scientific sundial and fine art sculpture would loom over the town.

It would tower over the 20m Angel of the North, but would be dwarfed by Portsmouth's 170m Spinnaker Tower.

As well as being a tourist and education attraction, the project, where visitors would be able to explore time, would create a number of jobs.

Council leader Cllr Brain Leverett has welcomed it as an "exciting proposition" and said: "Early reactions have been extremely positive.

"However, before we can be certain that the Solar Pyramid would be right for Poole, a lot of assessment and evaluation work needs to be undertaken and work will progress over the next few months."

Project architect and artist Richard Lester Swain said: "The Solar Pyramid would be a thing of considerable beauty.

"It would be a piece of sculpture that offers people an opportunity for quiet reflection but combined with this it would have real scientific interest, an important educational role and it would contribute to the local economy."

It has the support of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and the high-tech sundial aims to create a moving demonstration of the link between time and space and the power of the sun on everyday life.

So why did they move the project from Derbyshire? Because the East Midlands Development Agency wouldn't stump up any cash for it, that's why. Which raises the question: which local agency is willing to give financial support for the project in Poole? Perhaps Poole Borough Council itself is providing the cash? If so, I think the developers have seen them coming. Perhaps I should approach them with my idea of a monorail?!

Initial reactions positive? From whom? Presumably from those who will gain financially one way or another. This is the first the public have heard what it proposed, and I don't their their reaction will be positive.
Presumably it will cast a giant shadow over the area to its north.

Seems like it was going to be built in Derbyshire until quite recently. Wonder what went wrong there then?

The scheme appears to have a parallel sales channel in the form of "moments in time" which you can buy for the sum of £49.75 - involves something being engraved onto the side of the structure. So basically its a glorified advertising board!

Also mention on Labour MP's website though the cost of engraving is £1001 there (business rates you know):

Seems like this is a money making scheme really. Which is not a bad thing in itself. But I think tradition suggests engravings on monuments (or things that look like monuments) are earned and not bought. So this all feels a bit tawdry to me.

A 2nd hand idea that bears no relation to Poole's maritime heritage or history. If it was'nt acceptable for Derbyshire why is it acceptable for this to blight the views around Poole Harbour. There's already been enough unsympathetic development as it is.

This 'artwork' has been in negotiation in Derbyshire for 7 years and now the artist is desperately trying to push the idea onto someone else. It's quite clear that it failed to secure funding and support in the Midlands and I'm amazed that Poole Council would see this of being of local benefit.

It'd cost a small fortune having the graffiti cleaned from it every day. Why should Poole Council Tax payers pick up the tab for this folly?

Surely, the South West Development Agency would follow their East Midlands counterparts and withold funding? That leaves private sponsorship and the prospect of the pyramid being covered in tacky advertising.

I'm just a tad confused by this and I would very much like to pose some questions to Councellor Leverett and see if he can provide us with some honest information.

1) From what source is the money being taken to fund this venture?

2) He says that early reactions have been very positive. Whose reactions are these and what percentage of people these people have supported the decision?

3) Were the people who supported the decision informed where the sundial is to be placed or were they merely asked whether it would be nice to put it in Poole?

3) How have they estimated this figure of 400,000 visitors per annum?

The bottom line of this is that although I'm sure it could be an attractive piece of artwork, it is ludicrous to destroy a large portion of much used and appreciated land to erect a monument that has been offered second-hand, following rejection from somewhere else.

I wonder when the people who make these decisions will think with their hearts instead of their wallets and see the natural beauty around them rather than what they can make from it?

And I also would like to know how it is that if they have all this apparently disposable extra money (our money), they are not using it to fund things the town has been crying out for for a long time?

Nothing wrong with building a bold piece of art but I do not think it is appropriate for the location and doubt it would be sufficiently worthy to encourage tourists or locals. A tower has been done elsewhere so little point copying that but a sundial, despite the belief that Poole basks in it for so long, is a bit of a white elephant. Baiter offers enough natural beauty. Why are they not planning to use the power station area or Holes Bay area. Make it a gateway feature behind the views rather than something in competition with them. Furthermore, makeit something more interactive with a chance to draw more people to the town. Such a shame the Spinnaker Tower is in Portsmouth. Placing it in Poole to offer views to the Purbecks and over the harbour to rival Constitution Hill would have been nice. I think people should welcome the idea but offer a constructive opinion as to the style and location of an alternative.

If I managed to get a spare hour and took a stroll down to baiter, and if the sun was out, by simply observing the 200 foot 'hour hand' of the shadow I could make an accurate record of the time that dog owners were allowing their dogs to foul the footpaths and grass.

Would it need to be on some kind of huge pivoting mechanism so it could be wound back for British Summer Time ?

Ham, Poole says...

You have got to be kidding, this seems to be a complete waste of 'time' and money. Poole doesn't need an eyesore like Portsmouth has.

Portsmouth tower is set in a new large development and therefore it was appropriate to have a new focal point. Just a shame about the design.

The Angel of the north is set in an open space and is a piece of stand alone art.

This monstrosity has been been designed; as you can see by the graphics to sit in an open space and to be viewed from a distance (a long, long distance). I would suggest that they leave it in Derbishire and we can be happy with the view we have of it from here.

Regarding the open space of the park, I believe that the people of Poole are concerned about development taking their open space. Our council is constantly fighting developers over open space and even charge an open space contribution under their Planning Policy for some developments. Why fill the open space of Baiter park with this "art work" when there is such a struggle for the council to retain open space. This sounds crazy!

In conclusion, this sculpture is not specifically designed for Poole and Baiter park, it is a second hand, hand me down that people don't want in Derbyshire. It seems whoever conceived it in Derbyshire and spent all that hard earned tax payers money doesn't want to face the embarrassment of their mistake and would like to off load it on us.

p.s. In case I didn't make myself clear I strongly object to the proposal. Please don't waste any more of our hard earned tax money even considering it for Poole.

Sorry but what does it matter if people do want to preserve Poole? What is wrong with that? So much of the world around us has changed but there are parts of Poole that have stayed the same for centuries and I don't see what is wrong with keeping it like that.

The fact is, a lot of people, tourists included, love Poole because it has some old fashioned shops and it has it's Old Town. The park has been around for more than a century and the bridge over the railway in the high street has also been there for more than a century. The simple truth is that if it isn't broke, why fix it? Especially when it uses other people's money.

Poole IS a beautiful place and most people don't see the point of taking some of that beauty away with a second-hand piece of scrap metal that could look very beautiful somewhere else!

So they want to take another open space that is well used all the year round away from the people of Poole. I am a regular user of Baiter and agree it would spoil the view we have across the harbour and the islands. It is a waste of the tax payers money and as someone else put it a hand me down from somewhere else that did not want it. When is there going to be a public consultation on it? What about using the money on things like better facilities in schools or better recreational facilities. I for one think it will be a hideous eyesore that will be in the same vein as the iron monstrosity on the quay. Give the people of Poole a chance to speak.

I have been lucky enough during my lifetime to see a number of the large natural harbours in the world. Whilst I cannot say Poole is the best, I have not seen one that is better. The view from Whitecliff to the Baiter is magnificent and should be cherished.

To add the grotesque, expensive, and stupid pyramid would in my view be vandalism.

I believe that it would be better for Poole and its residents to remove these “ experts “ and with the saving of their salaries provide the much needed park attendants

I really dont understand people's reactions some time. Its like they want their town to get held in the past and never ever change.

Think of all the great landmarks- london eye, eiffel tower, spinaker tower, angel of the north- they were all despised and derided when they were first announced, but all quickly came to be loved and became icons for their respective regions.

How anyone can compare this to the IMAX is bwyond me!

The IMAX is a disgustng looking CINEMA. Cimemas dont need to be in beautiful locations. Landmarks HAVE to be in beautiful locations.

I am quite appalled at just how many conservative NIMBY's live in the region- its been crippling both Bmth and Poole for yonks- its why we live in a cultural vacuum, apart from the hard work of a select few.

Baiter Park was given to the people of Poole for perpetuity, in exchange for the open land known as Lady's Walking Field, which is now the Dolphin Centre. They have no right to ever build on this land. No areas like these can ever be created again in Poole with the beauty of the harbour and the open recreation area. These areas must be protected for ourselves and future generations. The money involved in this structure would be better paid towards our health and education services. These types of so called Art would be better suited to areas which need regenerating. This is a place where people can unwind with their families and get awar from the stresses of modern life.

This is an archetypal regeneration folly that is a total waste of money. Regional development agencies around the country have been conned into funding a number of these schemes, wasting hundreds of thousands of pounds of what is ultimately taxpayers' money. This money could be better spent elswhere. They are being built under the pretext that they regenerate depressed areas and attract investment - totally vacuous thinking at best. If I lived in a depressed area I would want a well paid job, not a giant sundial visible from my back garden.
It is intended to illuminate this folly at night, so it is almost certainly going to be a source of unwanted light pollution, and as such will be detrimental to the quality of the night sky. It is now known that light pollution is detrimental to the environment, so anything that creates it unnecessarilly should not be tolerated.

I think I am the only one who is posting in favour of this 'folly'. Personally, i think a good 'folly' adds to the gaiety of the nation. Think millenium Dome, think 2012 Olympics. Bring it on!
Leaving aside the politics of the proposal, and that it's someone else's cast off, it has that wonderful 'wow' ingredient. I'm afraid that most of the detractors of this project are stuck in a John Constable time warp, with their Haywain view of what artistic endeavour should be.
As a regular visitor to Newcastle by road and rail, the view of Angel of the North astride the A1 as you reach Gateshead is an inspiring, lump-in-the-throat structure. I may not particularly like its aesthetic, and it's not all soft and curvy like the hill its sited on. It is incongruent, but surely that's the point. But hey, its soul is in its engineering, a magnificent gesture to the heritage of of the area in which it sits.
Spinnaker in Portsmouth was another grand design which attracted all the 'it's a smear to the spirit of Nelson' miserablists. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but no one can doubt it is now a majestic addition to the landscape around the Solent.
Solar Pyramid is absolutely what Poole needs. Hopefully it would help mummify all these antiquated views of art on this thread!

We are absolutely appalled and sickened by the absurd and totally mindless vandalism that is being proposed by those in authority over us. I refer to the monstrous, unsightly edifice that some arrogant, self opinionated narrow minded individuals are hell bent on building at Baiter to ‘adorn’ one of the most magnificent coastlines and already beautiful boroughs in England. Apparently it will increase the attraction of the area and boost tourism. Obviously, those blinkered, office bound morons have not noticed any of the attributes that we already have in this area and which provide natural attractions without having to wasting a huge amount of public money. Baiter Park is a recreation on its own with beautiful views over the exquisite Poole Harbour enjoyed for its boating, dinghy sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing and canoeing, etc. Additional attractions are the oldie-worldie charm of Poole Quay, Poole Park with its boating lake and many facilities, Brownsea and other islands with their wild heath lands and bird sanctuaries, the nearby Purbeck hills, as well as miles of sandy beaches from Hengistbury Head, through to Sandbanks to Studland. All these attractions already bring a vast amount of visitors to Poole and if that isn’t enough, then a great metallic pyramid certainly will not, and at any rate, not bring the discerning class of clientele that we justly deserve Why can’t people ever live anywhere without the Council turning it into a veritable theme park?!

We live close to Whitecliffe and are horrified at the thought that the beautiful view of the harbour might be desecrated by a huge, artificial, incongruous eye-saw, not to mention the extra strain on the roads and local infrastructure that is already being pushed to the limit by the relentless, and seemingly unstoppable, over-development ….. but that’s another story – don’t get me going!

Just a minute, we’ve worked it out ….. Poole Council is obviously jealous of Bournemouth’s creation and wants something to equal their view blocking ‘Imax’!
