FASCINATING videos of Bournemouth from decades gone by have been thrilling thousands of people online.

Rod Bean, 76, from Bournemouth, has been sharing snippets of his home movies in popular nostalgic Facebook group, Memories of Old Poole & Bournemouth.

One of the most recent videos Rod has shared shows footage of Westover Road including the former Odeon cinema, which was showing The Jewel of the Nile at the time starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, the former Tourist Information Centre, The Arcade shopping centre and shops in Old Christchurch Road. It was captured on VHS around 1986.

The video has since had 51,000 views and 600 shares.

He also has footage of popular attraction Shell House in Southbourne in December 1986 which was demolished in 2003 to make way for flats.

Rod, who first got a cine camera as a teenager, said he is going through his collections and has hundreds of videos to wade through.

Rod, who used to manage the Cranbourne Hall Hotel, said: “I moved down here in the 70s and it was what I considered to be really nice back then.

“It is true what a lot of people say it looked more cared for than it does now.

“That’s how we’re going, with the internet and things like that I mean it’s changed everything, hasn’t it? I think that’s what a lot of people remark at, no phones, because everybody’s now walking round looking at their phones.”

Rod started sharing his videos online in 2014.

He added: “You wish you’d taken other things now because if you think about it people comment on the roads and say ‘look there’s no potholes’, and all sort of things like that, no speed bumps, no potholes.”
