Each week we will be profiling one of our Camera Club members, their favourite moments and top tips. For our first week, meet Daniel Sands.

Name: Daniel Sands

Years behind the lens: Two

Current Camera: Canon 5d mk3 with 24-105 f/4 IS L lens

Dream camera: Hasselblad H6D-100c

Piece of equipment you couldn’t be without: My phone. As per my top tip, you need to plan your shoots and your phone is a perfect tool for doing so.

Favourite Dorset location: Right now it's Cranborne Chase, the hills on the Dorset/Wiltshire border provide incredible photo opportunities and are relatively unexplored.

Dream location: Reykjavik. To view and shoot the Northern Lights is something that's been on my bucket list for many years and I hope one day I'll get the chance.

Worst photographic mishap: Heading to a shoot I picked up my camera bag, not realising that I'd left the side zip undone, and my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens went crashing to the floor and was broken beyond repair.

Best photographic success: I've had 2 stand out moments of success. I was lucky enough to witness a rare solar pillar at Corfe Castle, the next day this photo was printed on the front page of The Daily Telegraph. The second came when I was shortlisted for Historic Photographer of the Year.

Top tip: The 3 P's - Planning, Patience & Perseverance. The thing to invest time in is planning - 99% of my images don't happen by chance, although the composition on the day is in reflection to the scene in front of me I'll have a rough idea of what I want to shoot before I leave my house. It's also important to remember to be patient and persevere - you might not get the right shot the first time you're on location, keep trying until you're happy and don't give in.

What you’ve gained/learnt from or liked about Echo Camera Club Dorset:

The group is a fantastic sounding board for work, given the large user base you can almost instantly gauge reaction and gather feedback for your images without making them public and the spread of professional and amateur photographers in the group means you're getting unbiased reviews.
