The A35 was closed for a few hours yesterday due to a woman on the Maiden Castle Road bridge over the Dorchester Bypass.

The woman was later taken to a place of safety, Dorset Police said.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said they received a number of reports reporting concern for the woman's welfare.

The bridge is located between Monkey's Jump roundabout and the Tesco roundabout near Dorchester.

The spokesman added they were first alerted to the incident at 2.30pm.

South West Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they attended the scene following a call. They added that one ambulance attended. 

Traffic was diverted through Dorchester whilst the incident was ongoing.

There were reports of heavy traffic in and around the county town with big queues building up.

The incident concluded at 4.30pm and the road was reopened.
