ASPIRING film-makers will have just 48 hours to write, shoot and edit a movie before seeing it on a big screen.

The third Shooting From The Hip 48 Hour Film Contest will take place over the weekend of November 16-18, with a screening the following Tuesday at Boscombe’s Shelley Theatre.

Participants need to put together a small team ready for the Friday launch, where they will be handed their assignment. The brief may include being given a genre and a line of dialogue that must be included.

Organiser Will Whiting said: “We see the teams off at about 8-8.15pm and we give them 48 hours to write, shoot and edit the thing and have it back with us via a file sharing platform.”

The resultant films are normally around five minutes long and all of are shown at the screening event.

“Some of them are great. They’re rough and ready but full of creativity,” he said.

“Some of them look amazing as well – but to put something out in 48 hours, to make something that’s coherent, is really good. I’m always impressed by people that can do that in 48 hours. It’s a tough film-making challenge.”

Four prizes are given out at the Tuesday event, including the Golden Holster award for the best film.

This year’s judges include the Nerd Pirates – twins Lily and Violet Adams, who have created award-winning films, ads and social media.

Mr Whiting said the screening event was a valuable opportunity for the film-makers.

“That’s such an informative process for a film-maker to see what lands and what doesn’t, but also there’s a nervous energy in the room when people are watching their films and your film is coming up. It’s just a great atmosphere,” he said.

He has always been interested in film-making and set up a business making corporate video after working in music and with young people.

“I was always looking for things to get young people involved in. I thought having a mode of expression was really important. If you can’t express yourself or articulate yourself, that can lead to a lot of frustrations,” he said.

“Having creative and supportive outlets is really important.”

He said his top tip for contestants was to get involved. “That’s the one idea – to get people involved. Whatever you do, no matter what you think of what you’ve done, just complete it and submit it,” he said.
