A SPECIAL event will take place in Boscombe today to celebrate people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
The Recovery on the Beach event at the volleyball courts on Boscombe Beach has been organised by those who use local drug and alcohol services along with staff members.
The aim of the event is to break down the stigma that can be associated with addiction and let people know there is help out there.
It will start with a volleyball tournament at 2pm with live music, entertainment and a BBQ from 6pm. The winning teams will be awarded their medals at 7.30pm.
There will be a two-minute candlelit vigil at 8.30pm to pay tribute and remember loved ones whose lives have been lost to drugs.
Kevin Tapscott, of Addaction Bournemouth, said: “There are many people in this world (including a long list of famous people), through no fault of their own have gone down a road of addiction. Once you have that addiction it's a very difficult, tough and struggling place to recover from.
“Bournemouth has its fair share of people who are suffering with this illness, and that's what it is, an illness. It's not something anyone chose. It's an illness that slowly creeps up on you. But there is help and recovery is achievable.”
