TRAFFIC issues hit Highcliffe on Tuesday during the second day of roadworks in the village.

A lorry became trapped in a sinkhole on a street off Lymington Road.

The road was closed in both directions, with cordens in place, leading to delays for motorists across Christchurch.

Police and fire service crews were in attendance.

Access to Highcliffe high street was restricted and a diversion route was put in place. Pedestrians were able to pass on the opposite side of the road.

The road was closed off by police between the crossroads with Gordon Road and Waterford Road up to near The Globe pub.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 4.42pm by a member of staff at Jewsons to reports one of their lorries had got stuck in a sinkhole.

"It was a concern that the road would collapse and the lorry would go into the high street.

"We are allowing pedestrians to come through on one side of the road and closures are still in place."

Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle was on a side street off Lymington Road next to the Hoburne development on the north of the high street.

A group of men were seen discussing the situation near the location of the stricken vehicle.
