I COULD not believe it when I read your article saying council will 'bend' rule for cycling along Bournemouth's promenade (Thurs Aug 2).
I am amazed that this event was sanctioned at all, surely a rule is a rule, as with the law.
As for being 'risk assessed', that in itself is a nonsense, as there is always a risk that someone could be injured.
How can Cllr Oakley dismiss a proposal for a cycle lane along the prom, saying it would exacerbate conflict between cyclists and pedestrians, then support this suspension of the ban during this event?
We often walk along the promenade and only last week pointed out to two cyclists the cycling prohibited notice.
One duly dismounted while the other, a male with a child in a seat, just carried on with a smirk. This rule however, is not being enforced properly by the council officials on the spot.
I have seen cyclists blatantly passing uniformed officials and nothing is said to them!
