POLICE in rural north Dorset are warning of a new scam.
A Sherborne resident was called by a person who claimed they represented BT this week.
The caller said they could provide a service so the resident wouldn't receive any unwanted calls. The resident was then asked for part of their debit card number.
A spokesperson from Dorset Police said: "The resident later realised this was a scam and cancelled their bank card as a precaution.
"These fraudsters 'spoof' the number they're calling from, so if victims dial 1471 they might see a fictitious number that masks the real destination.
"Fraudsters may also offer you a call-back number to confirm the legitimacy of their call."
