A CASH machine was left hanging from a village shop on Sunday morning after a burglary went wrong.

Thieves attempted to use a Land Rover to rip the machine from the edge of a Co-Op in Alderholt near Fordingbridge in the early hours.

The efforts of the criminals were thwarted when they realised the machine was attached to the store, prompting them to bail out.

The crooks failed to get away with anything, with the cash point weighed down with ballast and refusing to budge.

One resident said: "They did not get away with it, but it caused a lot of damage. This is the second time in the last 18 months."

Police deployed the NPAS helicopter, which was seen over Alderholt at around 3am, after receiving reports of the attempted burglary.

The Land Rover that was used in the failed heist has also been recovered by the police as they continue to investigate.
