FIREFIGHTERS tackled a heath fire in Wareham this afternoon.

Crews from Swanage, Poole, Wareham and Bere Regis were called to extinguish a blaze near Arne. A water carrier from Christchurch and two Land Rovers were also called out.

A "large area of heathland" was alight, representatives from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service say. The fire has now been extinguished.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the area will be inspected for flare-ups later this evening.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The fire covered an area of 135 metres by 50 metres."

Police are not currently at the scene.
