A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a crash outside a New Forest hotel on Tuesday.

The biker, a Bournemouth man in his 60s, was involved in a collision with a silver Honda Jazz on the A35 Lyndhurst Road at around 10.10am. He was thrown through the air, landing on the carriageway.

Farmhands working on land near the road rushed to his aid and gave CPR until paramedics and police arrived at the scene.

Despite the efforts of all involved, the casualty died at the scene.

The driver of the Jazz, an 87-year-old man from Christchurch, was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries.

It is believed the motorcyclist and the Honda collided as the car made a turn across the carriageway into the Eastclose Country House Hotel.

Around 100 people are currently attending a conference at the hotel. Some of the guests are believed to have witnessed the collision.

Officers closed the A35 between East Close Farm and Lyndhurst Road for investigations to take place. The road remained closed for around six hours.

Bournemouth Echo:

The front of the car was badly damaged. Both airbags had inflated and the windscreen was shattered.

The wreckage of the motorcycle lay directly in front of the Honda's bonnet.

Sergeant Andy Gwyer of Hampshire police urged anyone with information to contact him on 101 quoting 44180248882.

He said: “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident, or anyone who saw a silver Honda Jazz or a black Honda CBR motorcycle being driven on the A35 prior to the collision, to contact us."

A resident who rushed to the scene after learning of the crash said: "People seem to forget that this is an A road.

Bournemouth Echo:

"There are plenty of smaller roads off the main carriageway, and drivers are joining a 60 mile per hour road at zero miles per hour.

"It's a killer.

"People seem to drive very badly along this road. You get a lot of tourists to the New Forest using it in the summer months, and they just don't understand it's the major route here."
