FLATULENT taxi passengers and 'a dodgy fish supper' are just some of the lame excuses drivers have offered police officers when stopped for speeding.

Dorset Police's No Excuse team regularly share the most ridiculous reasons given by those flouting road traffic laws. The Daily Echo has rounded up 10 of the worst excuses posted to the team's Facebook page since February 2017. The offences included speeding, using a phone while driving, drug and drink driving.

June 2018: Police stopped a driver for using her mobile phone at the wheel.

The woman told officers she was texting her boyfriend. The text she sent was warning him of a mobile speed camera down the road, according to the No Excuse team.

The woman was given a ticket for six points and a £200 fine.

April 2018: A cyclist went through a red light. When they were stopped they told officers: "I'm from London, I don't know the rules down here." They were issued a ticket and advice on reading the highway code.

She was given six points and a £200 fine.

The driver was stopped on Castle Lane West and given six points, a £300 fine and had their vehicle taken off the road.

January 2018: A vehicle was stopped for driving at 76mph on Lindsay Road, Poole. The speed limit is 30mph. The driver told officers he was speeding as he was 'running out of fuel'. Officers checked the fuel gauge and found the car had over a quarter of a tank.

September 2017: A driver who “stank of cannabis” told police they had read on Facebook that cannabis only stays in the system for eight hours after a drug wipe was carried out.

He was arrested for drug driving.

July 2017: A motorcyclist told a police officer he did not believe in road traffic law when caught speeding.

He was caught riding at 70mph in a 50mph limit in Holes Bay Road, Poole.

When Dorset Police No Excuse officer PC Spratt stopped the rider, he reportedly said he 'only acknowledged common law'.

March 2017: A motorist spotted driving carelessly by police said he was speeding because of a "dodgy fish supper" he ate on a date the night before.

Officers stopped the driver on the A31 near Ferndown. He was observed driving poorly and undertaking other road users.

February 2017: A speeding taxi driver blamed the flatulence of his three passengers when stopped by police in Bournemouth town centre.

February 2017: A man caught speeding told police he was driving to the shops to get more alcohol for a friend who couldn't drive.

The driver was stopped for allegedly travelling at 51mph in a 30mph zone in Ringwood Road, Christchurch.

According to the Dorset Police No Excuse Team the driver smelled of alcohol and subsequently failed a roadside breath test.
