June 1958 saw the brand new Sandbanks ferry being moved into position to take over from the older steam powered craft which first came into service in 1926.
The ferry was able to carry up to thirteen more vehicles than its predecessor and was diesel-electric powered.
The current ferry, Bramble Bush Bay, took over the service in 1994.
