A SCHOOL for people with autism and Asperger syndrome has seen its bid for new care home rejected.

Cambian Wing College sought to convert the house and coach house at 65 Nortoft Road into a home for young people aged between 16 and 25 with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

Its application said: "The proposal will provide a much-needed home for students attending Cambian Wing College, and will allow for the service to expand."

However council planning officers ruled that the scheme was inappropriate for the setting and would lead to much overlooking of neighbours' properties.

Their report states: "It is considered that the introduction of living accommodation within the coach house and intensity of the use proposed would result in a detrimental impact on neighbouring residents in terms of overlooking and noise generated by the additional comings and goings and the addition of residential accommodation in the rear garden area in such close proximity to neighbouring properties."

The scheme received 18 letters of objection raising concerns about overdevelopment, overlooking and parking pressure, among other issues.
