A BOAT has been filled with colourful flowers in Southbourne to mark 100 years of votes for women.

Residents and traders teamed-up with Bournemouth in Bloom to plant the boat which has been placed at the junction of Pine Avenue and Southbourne Road.

The sailboat contains lavender and salvia to echo the Suffragettes colours with purple representing justice, white for purity and green indicating hope.

The surrounding area has been covered in shingle and the transformation of the patch of ground has taken several weeks.

Chris Colledge, chairman of Bournemouth In Bloom, said: “Everyone worked incredibly hard and we achieved a lot. It’s all going to look fantastic.”

The Southbourne boat garden is one of several in the Bournemouth area marking centenaries of the end of the First World War, the founding of the RAF and votes for women.
