PLANS to convert a vacant shop in Ringwood into a home are being recommended for approval.

An application to redevelop the building at 3 Strides Lane was submitted last year by Surefreed Limited with its director, Peter Hayward, saying that it is an unpopular location.

The firm redeveloped a number of the listed buildings in Market Place, Ringwood, as well as in adjoining Strides Lane, in 2002.

“The first retail tenants went out of business in less than 12 months – they complained that there was no passing trade and people, when crossing over from Market Place to West Street, looked up and down Market Place and not down Strides Lane.

“Retail trade has changed dramatically throughout the country and Ringwood is no exception.”

The application proposes converting the building into a maisonette and has been supported by Ringwood Town Council.

A decision on whether to grant permission will be made at the meeting of New Forest District Council’s planning committee on Wednesday with officers recommending that it is approved.
