A COMMUNITY fund linked to the popular New Forest Marathon has become a standalone charity to help provide even more support to local causes.

Organisers ORA Events say the move will simplify the funding process for the New Forest Marathon Community Fund (NMCF).

The fund was set up by Chris Farr and Andy Daish during the re-structure of the marathon in 2015.

It has produced more than £40,000 for local community groups since its inception.

Initially the NFMCF was part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIOWCF) that allowed it to function and establish itself.

ORA Events aimed to convert it into a charity of its own right within years years, which has now been achieved.

Chris Farr, of ORA Events, said: “Our vision was to ensure the charitable ethos of the New Forest Marathon was retained through the New Forest Marathon Community Fund.

"Our challenge in the early days was that financially we were unable to make the NFMCF a standalone charity so we are grateful to the team at HIOWCF for supporting us, but it’s fantastic news that we’ve been able to reach this position.”

The funding awarded so far has contributed towards many projects including an international Guide camping event, activity trips and sports equipment.

ABP Southampton provided £10,000 of match funding in 2016 and have continued to support the fund in subsequent years.

This year's New Forest Marathon takes place on Sunday, September 9, with a range of races for all ages and abilities.
