BEACH hut owners in Christchurch are celebrating after a broken standpipe was finally resolved after weeks of frustration.

Mary Jenkins, who has a hut at Friars Cliff, claimed it was unacceptable for it to take so long for the issue to be fixed.

The standpipe in question stopped working in early April and was repaired by Christchurch Borough Council earlier this month after Ms Jenkins contacted the paper.

She claimed a sign that had been put on the standpipe stated it would not be fixed until June.

Ms Jenkins says she bought her beach hut four years ago specifically because of its location next to the supply.

She says it was "ridiculous" that Christchurch Borough Council was unable to fix the problem sooner.

"It probably didn't need much to fix it. The whole situation is just not good enough," Ms Jenkins said.

"To get to the next nearest standpipe you have to walk down the slope and go down towards Highcliffe and then take a carrier of water back. I'm not able to do that.

"A lot of us along there are retired and are not quite as mobile as we used to be.

"There is no excuse for it really. We have been waiting for this service to be reinstalled since the beginning of April and before it broke entirely the tap was dreadful.

"We have paid our money and we are getting nothing back from them."

Ms Jenkins says she was told by the council that the standpipe is not included in the fees that beach hut owners pay.

She told the Daily Echo she would gladly pay for the service as it is essential to owning a beach hut.

Christchurch Borough Council's community and recreation team confirmed the broken tap was fixed earlier this month after a sign was put on the standpipe to inform people of the scheduled repair.
