NEW skylights are now blocking damaging UV light at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum.

The Victorian house in Bournemouth, which was completed in 1901, has four Edwardian stained glass skylights above its galleries which have now been cleaned and set in new frames, with UV-blocking glass to help preserve the gallery's delicate exhibits.

Those working on the five month project, which was funded with the aid of a £130,000 grant from the Government and cash from the Wolfson Foundation, included specialist glass restorers from Salisbury Cathedral.

A number of other renovations have been carried out over the past few months, a report to the council's Russell Cotes management committee states.

These include an "exact" replica replacement for the carpet on the stairs and landing, polishing the wooden floors, and cleaning of paintings and sculptures.

Bleedon gravel was laid on the lower level garden making it accessible for people in wheelchairs.
