OSCAR-winning actor Tim Robbins has become the latest big name to sign up to a science fiction thriller from a pair of Bournemouth film-makers.

The star of The Shawshank Redemption and The Player is the second Oscar winner to put his name to forthcoming movie A Patriot.

The post-apocalyptic film is to be made by the team behind the locally-shot horror film K-Shop.

Robbins joins fellow Academy Award winner Kathy Bates, Game of Thrones actor Ed Skrein and star Eva Green, whose roles have included Kingdom of Heaven and the James Bond film Casino Royale.

Tim Robbins won an Oscar for his role in Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River and has also appeared in Bull Durham and Jacob’s Ladder, as well as directing Dead Man Walking and Bob Roberts.

A Patriot’s director, Dan Pringle, said: “Tim is an icon of cinema who possesses a striking versatility. I’m delighted to welcome him to the team we’ve assembled for A Patriot.”

A Patriot is being produced by Bournemouth film company White Lantern with Red & Black Films.

Dan Pringle conceived the script, while fellow Adam Merrifield is producing the film with a budget of 10million US dollars.

The film takes place in 2051, when Britain is an authoritarian state with a wall to separate it from a world ravaged by climate chaos and wars for resources.

Eva Green plays a border patrol captain who fights to defend the purity of the population until a chance discover makes her doubt the authorities she has pledged to protect.

The film-makers have been at the Cannes Film Festival, where they announced they had secured equity backing from equity funders Umedia and Texit Films.

Producer John Giwa Amu, Red & Black Films said: “We are thrilled to be working with dynamic new equity players Texit films and the well-established team at U Media to complete the equity financing of A Patriot this week.”

Filming on A Patriot is due to begin in September in Wales, and the production will be administered through White Lantern’s office near Bournemouth’s Triangle.

It is scheduled to be ready for release in 2019.
