THE third annual Purbeck Pirate Festival is set for Swanage later this month.

Overlooking the town's main beach, Sandpit Field will be bursting with pirate-themed stalls, a living history encampment, mermaids, storytime sessions and - of course - sword fights.

A festival spokesman explained: "Once again there will be musket and canon fire galore, as pirates from across the country descend on Swanage for a fun-filled, four-day pirate festival.

"Bartholomew Leach, the Pirate Surgeon, will be on-hand to tend to the gruesome and bloody wounds inflicted during the weekend’s many skirmishes and sword fights, removing limbs and musket balls where required.

"Demonstrations of musket and canon fire, as well as sword fighting, will also take place throughout the weekend."

One of the highlights of the event, taking place this year on Saturday and Sunday, is the Purbeck Pirate Parade. This will wind its way from Sandpit Field along the seafront in time to watch the beach skirmish between the pirate crews and the Kings' Men.

All visiting pirates are invited to join the parades.

Shanty singers Kelp! and the Wareham Whalers will be performing during the event, as well as Jack Sparrow impersonator, Jax Parrow.

The spokesman added: "Swanage shopkeepers will be ‘going pirate’ too, with most competing in the best dressed shop window competition, thus creating a true ‘pirate town’ for the weekend.

"So, dress as your pirate self and head to Swanage with friends and family for a weekend to remember! All events are free to attend, and all are welcome in the spirit of parley."

The Purbeck Pirate Festival is scheduled for May 25-28.
