Road to close for the Arrows

BOURNEMOUTH'S East Overcliff Drive will be closed and a maritime exclusion zone enforced at sea tomorrow when the Red Arrows jet into town.

Tens of thousands are expected to gather along the clifftops to watch the world famous Red Arrows perform their jaw-dropping repertoire of aerobatic manoeuvres, thanks to Bournemouth-based VTSS.

The road closures in the East Cliff area, which will take place between 11am and 12.30pm, are being tried to see if they can help prevent congestion caused by motorists stopping in the road to watch the show. Only residents and the emergency services will be allowed access during the closures.

There will also be a mile-long maritime exclusion zone in operation just off Bournemouth Pier to meet basic safety requirements between 11am and 11.25am and 11.50am and 12.30pm.

Chairman of the Bournemouth Red Arrows Association, Terry Trevett, said: "I do ask everyone on and in the water to respect the zone, which forms an essential part of the safety requirements for the aerial display.

"Please co-operate with and respect the marshals if you are asked to move from your position. They really are there to help us ensure everyone has a safe time while enjoying the displays."

The corners of the exclusion zone, which extend 0.5 nautical miles east and west of Bournemouth Pier and 430 metres out from the pierhead, will be marked out with sailing markers.

Marshall boats, which will be identified by orange flags, and various coastguard and police patrol vessels will be on hand to help and advise.

A band of collectors, identified by yellow bibs and name badges, will be on the scene collecting donations for this year's chosen charity the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

As the Reds do not have a display in the afternoon, fans will have a rare opportunity to speak to the team at Pier Approach from between 2.15pm and 3.45pm.

Friday's entertainment begins at 11.15am with a seven-minute display by a single Tucano aeroplane.

Hate to be a killjoy, but what is the carbon footprint of this display? And would it not be better not to have the display and donate the savings on fuel to the charity? I find it hard to believe that enough will be collected to cover that.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL.
The Red Arrows are world famous, and unique to this country alone. They are one of the few remaining things that Britain is great for, and youre worried about the carbon footprint that nine aircraft will produce during a 20 MINUTE display??
Hardly worth talking about.:)

Why close te East Overcliff Drive? I assume the Undercliff Drive will remain open so the Council can still rip holiday makers of for parking. Next year I expect the Health & Safety nutters will ban spectators.

So to prevent congestion on the surrounding roads caused by people stopping on East Overcliff Drive to watch the display, they're going to close East Overcliff Drive...? Err, right, that sounds perfectly sensible to me!?! Why not just have a few police up there to keep the traffic moving?

Can't we just enjoy something without some pc dullard whingeing on about carbon footprints ? The Red Arrows are special and thousands enjoy their displays every year. This country is becoming more miserable and enjoyment free by the day - put a sock in it beachcomber and enjoy the show !

Can I urge anyone with a boat to ignore this 'safety zone' . Its a load of tosh - What are they worried about - falling planes ? Get real..........this is another example of the council sticking their nose into everyone else's business and where its not wanted. Also , do they have a jurisdiction or powers to order people about in the water this far off the beach ? can someone tell me why we have a council that is anti their residents and rate payers having a good time.

I'm sure many thousands of Romans enjoyed watching the slaughters in the Coliseum. What a specious argument!

And no one has responded to my question whether the money spent on the aviation fuel would best be donated directly to the charity.

Romans? What Romans? As far as cancelling the display, the same could easily be said for the private jet/terawatt electrical use/mega hotel bill/huge food costs at Al Gore's self-indulgent festivals last month. They paid carbon credits? Big deal. Carbon credits are nothing more than a celebrity's way to appear green while keeping the Lear Jet.

Perhaps you might be interested to know that the Red Arrows cost the tax payers £5.5M per year for which they performed 59 times in the UK and 16 times abroad in 2006
This means that every performance is subsidised to the tune of £73,000

The money raised for charity comes from beach collections and sponsorship. Deduct the cost of the diaplay and still many thousands are made for charity.

No Red Arrows = No spectators = No sponsorship = NO money to charity!

Well you don't have much of a choice about it so why not just go and watch them and get your money's worth? DOOFUS.

Also with regards to the carbon footprint, assuming every one of the estimated 10'000 sits on their backsides and watches tv that same evening I'm pretty sure the amount of electricity used will roughly produce around the same sort of footprint . But I bet you wouldn't give up tv for a year to stop your carbon emissions?!?!

Climate change may be a reoccurring sequence but does anyone really welcome a new ice age or winters so cold that the Thames froze hard enough to support markets. These are recorded in our history but the predictions are beyond normal and it is no good burying your head in the sand; what is predicted is going to change live for everyone.

Have you not heard?

Health and safety have discovered after billions of pounds in taxpayers money and over a decade of research that the main cause of death among all life is birth...so in the interests of public Health and Safety all births will from next January be banned unless foetus's attend a 6 week training course in avoiding death.

And if you believe that then you will also believe that there is some intelligence in even one H&S employee!

I dont hate this country - just the idiots that open their mouths before engaging their brains. The Red Arrows may be seen as a "luxury" but they are admired the world over and I think Bournemouth benefits from their annual show here.
As for closing East Overcliffe Drive - with all the pedestrians standing in the road and the car drivers not paying attention to the road because their heads are in the clouds it will only be a matter of time before someone is knocked down and seriously hurt / killed. Then the council will be sued for thousands and who will ultimately have to pay for that? Never mind the trauma that the people involved will go through.
Lighten up and live a little - the road will only be closed a short time and there are other ways to get around the town in any case.
Long may the red arrows team continue visiting us.

The Lib Dem record is there for all to see and if you look you will note that over the last 4 years we cut more than £10m in admin costs and reduced the increase in Council tax year on year resulting in an increase in this current year of 3.2%
At the same time we had an extensive Capital Program which was virtually fully funded
In the first three months of your Tory administration they have created jobs for the boys costing £146K
scrapped the Arts scheme on the Winter Gardens site , virtually thrown the Pavilion scheme out complete with £13M private investment in refurbishment and have sold 3 car parks at two at less than best value
If you monitered local affairs you would know that you could never accuse me of not disclosing figures so can only assume your comment is politically motivated

A.F. wrote about how the Lib-Dems saved £10M in admin costs. I can’t help thinking that a degree of creative accounting has taken place to come to this figure. The number of Council Employees increases year on year irrespective of which party is in overall control yet services fail to improve … conclusion these additional people must be employed in admin or non-jobs.

Are you suggesting that we should not believe what politicians say are you? Even worse you say climate change is not entirely our fault. Surely you realise that the English channel was created thousands of years ago by rising sea levels due to global warming - it was all those cars, planes, power stations that did it you know!

Small price to pay in retaining something that has made this country admired the world over, and has made British people proud to be British.
The Red Arrows are globally unique- 73k is a smal price to pay to keep something as unique as this British.
And tell me since your quoting figures- Just how much do you think he hundreds of thousands of fake asylum seekrs are costing this country?
A hell of a lot more money than 5.5m- But nobody says anything about how much they cost our system because its not right.
Leave the red arrows alone- They are the cream of the crop in the RAF and the world.
Lose them, and its another nail into the coffin of the word 'Britain'

'The bleeding obvious' asked who the jobsworth was who responsible for the 1 mile exclusion zone.

The jobsworth is actually the Civil Aviation Authority. Document CAP403 gives all the details. Read it sometime when you have about 3 hours to spare - it's available on their website.

It just shows how little former Cllr Fudge actually knows, and he clearly lives up to his name as he obviously likes to fudge the figures. The taxpayer doesn't subsidise each display by 73k at all, as each display and the associated insurance costs are funded by the show organiser - the RAF charge this to cover some of the cost. This year it was VTS at the airport who funded the display. The Arrows are also heavily sponsored by some British industries to lower any burden on the MoD budget. Funny how the fudger likes to conveniently forget to mention this. In all, the Arrows gave 150,000+ people on Friday a real sense of pride and British achievement - far more than the voted-out-of-office Figure-Fudger could even dream of, let alone bring anything like that sense of enjoyment to the Bournemouth residents and tourists. Bless him, I'm sure he'll grow up one day and get a life.
