A VETERAN councillor has called time on her role as chairman of Christchurch Borough Council's community committee.

North Highcliffe & Walkford ward councillor Sally Derham Wilkes made the announcement at a special meeting of the group last week, which was discussing plans for new parish authorities in Christchurch.

The Conservative Party member has led the community committee for many years and overseen debates on a number of important and contentious subjects in the borough.

St Catherine's & Hurn ward councillor Margaret Phipps is due to take over the role, having recently served as vice chairman.

Announcing her decision to step down at the conclusion of the meeting, Cllr Derham Wilkes said: "I'm sure she (Cllr Phipps) will take care of this committee. It will be in very safe hands.

"Thank you for all of your support over the last I don't know how many years."

On Cllr Derham Wilkes' calling time on her role as chairman, Cllr Phipps added: "I would like to thank you for everything you have done over the years. You have been chair of this committee for a very long time.

"I was quite sad when you said you were standing down."
