STRIKER Callum Wilson is eager for Cherries to secure Premier League safety by overcoming derby rivals Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday (3pm).

Victory for Eddie Howe’s men would ensure they remained a top-flight club for a fourth consecutive season, while defeat for relegation-threatened Saints would plunge them further in trouble.

Cherries, who have claimed 38 points, need wins from their final three games to surpass last season’s club record Premier League points total of 46.

Wilson told the Daily Echo: “We need wins. We need points on the board and we have a great opportunity with the derby.

“We are still not safe, so we need to fight for the points. We need to go there with the right mentality and not think the job is done.

“They have great players and it’s unfortunate the situation they are in. I am sure they might get themselves out of it but, hopefully, not against us.”

Frontman Wilson has gone 10 games without scoring – equalling his longest run of games without finding the net for Cherries.

He came off the bench during the 1-1 draw with Saints in December and started when the Hampshire club won 3-1 at Vitality Stadium 12 months earlier.

Wilson added: “As a professional, I need to do my job on the pitch. I don’t care who is in front of me, I want to score against them. I need a goal so I will be trying my hardest to get on the scoresheet.”
