THE cause of death of a Christchurch woman, who passed away suddenly in January, is still unknown.

An inquest into the death of 37-year-old Sanda Brakanska was opened at Bournemouth Coroner’s Court last Wednesday.

On Sunday, January 14, paramedics were called to Ms Brakanska’s home in Portfield Road after the ambulance service received reports of an unresponsive female.

Assistant Dorset coroner Brendan Allen heard she was transferred to Royal Bournemouth Hospital, however it was unclear during the inquest whether she died at home or in hospital.

Speaking at the inquest, coroner’s officer Alan Young said police officers were called to the hospital just after 2.30pm by staff.

There was “concern over a bruised eye” she had suffered, he said.

As reported previously in the Daily Echo, police enquiries were made into the cause of Ms Brakanska’s death, including forensic examination at her home address.

A 32-year-old man from Christchurch was arrested on suspicion of assault on the Sunday.

But police said on Tuesday, January 16, that the death was not being treated as suspicious and that the arrested man had been released under police investigation. A post-mortem examination carried out by pathologist Dr Basil Purdue at Holly Tree Lodge in Bournemouth found the cause of death as ‘still undetermined’, the inquest heard.

Assistant Dorset coroner Brendan Allen said he was adjourning the inquest until Wednesday, September 19.

He has requested a report from Ms Brakanska’s GP to find out whether she was known to a community alcohol team.

He has also asked for statements from family members, as well as South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) due to the “discrepancy” regarding the place of Ms Brakanska’s death.
