LEGAL action will be taken against unauthorised traveller encampments in Poole.

There are currently eight caravans and associated vehicles on Borough of Poole land at the Creekmoor Park and Ride site and four caravans near the town centre.

They are parked on private land adjacent to Serpentine Road, near to the Barclays building and a multi-storey car park.

A spokesman for Borough of Poole said checks are being carried out before legal action is commenced.

Portable toilets have been provided in a bid to "minimise environmental contamination."

Last week travellers in four caravans moved from land at Marsh End, adjacent to the park and ride site.

If caravans are parked on council land then Borough of Poole takes court action but on private land the land owner has the responsibility to take action.

A council spokesman said they must show a court that the encampment is on the land without consent and they must also make inquiries about health, welfare and children's education.

The council must also ensure that the Human Rights Act 1998 has been complied with and must obtain a court order to make people leave the site.
