THE Environment Agency has defended the installation of a section of metal railing at a New Forest beauty spot.

Residents came across the railing along the sea wall in Lymington next to Eight Acre Pond after it was installed in late-March.

The metal structure is positioned above a stream, but there are no details or signage outlining its purpose.

Members of the public questioned the purpose of the railing at that location.

Both New Forest District Council and Hampshire County Council said the railing had not been installed by their engineers and referred enquiries to the Environment Agency.

A spokesperson for the agency said: "The structure was installed by the Environment Agency for the health and safety of staff members cleaning debris from the trash screen, as well as to protect members of the public.

"It has been constructed from metal to enable it to support fall-restraint harnesses while staff clear debris."
