TRUCK driver Kate McDougal will make a special journey this weekend to deliver money raised in memory of her husband.

Kate promised husband Darryl she would pass her lorry test before he died in a freak accident in 2012.

Now she and their daughter, Kezzia, plan to travel to Harefield Hospital in an articulated lorry to hand over cash raised for the heart unit where Darryl was treated.

And their trip will be captured on camera by Bournemouth University student Sacha Clayton who is making a documentary as part of his course.

Darryl, 51, was waiting for a heart transplant and had a mechanical pump fitted to his heart.

But he dropped the controller one night as he was putting Kezzia back to bed and it stopped working. He died that night. Kezzia was just four-years-old at the time.

An inquest heard Kate was woken in the early hours of September 16 by her husband shouting.

Kate told the coroner: "Darryl was shouting ‘Kate, we have to change the controller now.’ The alarm was going off and the red triangle was flashing. We changed the controller and rang 999 but the alarm didn’t stop.

"His breathing changed and he started to sweat and lose colour. He collapsed on our bed."

Kate carried out CPR until paramedics took over but they were unable to save him.

Kate, of Moore Avenue, West Howe, Bournemouth told the Daily Echo: "I always said I would get a Class 1 truck licence and now I'm going to drive a truck all the way to Harefield.

"Kezzia will hand over a cheque and we will be greeted by staff from the unit where Darryl had been looked after."

Transport company AET from Holton Heath is lending its new truck, recently purchased to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary.

Kate added: "They have been really generous and have also made a cash donation. We currently have around £430 but I'm hoping to reach at least £500."

They will set off at 9am on Saturday March 24 and Kate urged any other truck drivers or motorcyclists who are free to follow them in a convoy, perhaps just for a small part of the journey.
