MORE than £500,000 of classic and vintage motor vehicles were sold at a north Dorset auction house over two weekends.

Charterhouse Auctioneers, Long Street, Sherborne, made the sales - which included vintage cars and motorcycles - earlier this February.

Top lot in the car auction was a 1951 Jaguar XK120 roadster, which was bought by the vendor as a 19-year-old student for £180 in 1969. The Jaguar sold for just under £77,000.

In the motorcycle auction a 1940 Indian Chief was sold to a German collector for just under £28,000.

Another motorcycle that attracted strong bidding was a 1935 Cotton JAP 25J, which had been stored in a Somerset barn and eventually sold for £8,000.

Charterhouse's Matthew Whitney said: "We had some fabulous entries across the board in both the car auction and the motorcycle auction.

"Viewing days and auction days for both sales were very busy, as were internet enquiries - and bids came in from not only across the UK, but also America, Germany and Holland."

Charterhouse is now accepting entries for their next specialist classic and vintage car auctions, set for April 11, and their classic and vintage motorcycle auction on May 2.
