A BOURNEMOUTH MP has been given an award for his courage after rushing to save a police officer killed during the Westminster terror attack.

Tobias Ellwood, who represents Bournemouth East, gave PC Keith Palmer CPR after the officer was stabbed confronting attacker Khalid Masood outside the Houses of Parliament last March.

Despite his efforts, PC Palmer died at the scene in New Palace Yard. The 48-year-old officer has now been named the winner of the ‘outstanding bravery of the year’ prize at the Met Excellence Awards.

PC Palmer had served with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Group since 2016 and had been with the Met for 16 years.

Mr Ellwood was also honoured at the London ceremony with an ‘outstanding contribution’ award.

The MP, a former Royal Green Jacket, gave the officer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in the moments after the attack.

He said he thinks of PC Palmer “every day”, and called the officer an “incredible man”.

“I say this on behalf of every parliamentarian – we never expect to hear shots fired in Parliament, in the mother of all democracies,” Mr Ellwood said.

“PC Keith Palmer gave the ultimate sacrifice and we in Parliament are forever indebted for that sacrifice.”

Home secretary Amber Rudd said: “PC Keith Palmer gave his life to protect the public.

“His courage and dedication to duty in confronting a vicious terrorist is testimony to the bravery shown every day by our police, who work so hard to keep us safe.

“It is absolutely fitting that PC Palmer and the outstanding bravery he showed have been honoured in this way.”

Mr Ellwood’s brother Jonathan died in a terror attack in Bali in 2002.

Last year, Prime Minister Theresa May said he had shown “extraordinary” bravery and “huge professionalism”.

“It was in the middle of a terrorist attack, and our right honourable friend is somebody who knows the trauma and tragedy of losing somebody in a terrorist attack,” she said.

She had earlier singled out the minister for praise, telling MPs: “We saw the worst of humanity but we will remember the best.

“We will remember the extraordinary efforts to save the life of PC Keith Palmer, including those by my right honourable friend, the member for Bournemouth East.”

Mr Ellwood has been an MP since 2005.
