TRIBUTES have been paid to a police worker who died during a birthday spa day.

Stephen Bullen died after suffering a cardiac arrest in a swimming pool at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel.

He served Dorset Police for 29 years in a number of roles, but notably with the Dorset Technical Support Unit and organised crime unit.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said he was widely known for his expertise and "was a very popular member of the team".

He was very well known for his attention to detail, skill and positive attitude, they added.

Dorset Police Chief Constable Debbie Simpson paid tribute to the 50-year-old at the force annual awards ceremony earlier in the week.

She said: “He has over his long service made a significant contribution to policing in both the apprehension of those who seek to profit from criminality and the safeguarding of the vulnerable.

“He received a Chief Constable’s commendation in 2011 for his work on the Heather Barnett murder investigation and the wording of his award describes his strengths perfectly – ‘outstanding professionalism, dedication and commitment’.

“His closest colleagues describe him as a man who cared for people, wanted to make them happy and build a strong team.

“The policing family has suffered a significant loss but out thoughts are of course with his loved ones.”
