A new group has been launched in Weymouth to help transform areas of the town.

The Volunteer Centre Dorset have set up the Green Fingers Group in Weymouth who have been tending to the piece of ground outside MFA Bowl.

Siobhan Davis from the Community Credit Scheme who helped launch the group said: “We have been there for only a couple of mornings and the general public have stopped to say how good it is looking. Imagine what we could do if we were volunteering all week."

The plants that are now in situ are apple trees, cherry trees, raspberries and blackcurrants.

This idea was brought to the group’s attention by Councillor Jon Orrell and they worked with him, the manager of the bowling alley and Weymouth BID to clear the mess up.

Claudia Moore, chief operations officer at Weymouth BID said: “It was a pleasure to support such a worthwhile project and to increase the charm of St Nicholas Street.”

MFA Bowl will be maintaining the area after the landscaping is finished.

Organisers also wanted to thank Eco Sustainable Solutions who supplied the soil free with only delivery charges and to Santander who have provided funding for a team leader.

The Green Fingers Group will soon be moving on to their next project which is in St John’s Gardens by The Park pub.
