THESE photos show the poor state of a major route through Poole.

The Echo visited Alder Road to record the number of potholes and cracks after receiving several tip-offs from residents of the borough and neighbouring Bournemouth about the state of the highways.

The photos reveal the important route through Rossmore is pitted and marked along its length.

Borough of Poole's cabinet member for transport Councillor Ian Potter did not respond to a call for comment from the Echo.

However the council is already acting in this area to improve the situation, with plans for resurfacing works to begin on Monday.

The borough was awarded £2.9 million in August to carry out highways improvements, which must be spent by the end of March this year.

On its website, the council says: "The A3040 Alder Road was identified along with a number of other locations where a structural maintenance scheme was required especially because of the condition and age of the existing infrastructure."

Work is due to begin near Langside Avenue, heading towards Herbert Avenue, with stop/go boards in place from 7.30am to 4pm during week days until Wednesday, February 21.

Another team will work between Herbert Avenue and Yarmouth Road with a temporary closure in place from 7am on Monday until 5.30pm on Friday, February 16.

From 7am on Monday, February 19, a southbound road closure will be in place from Yarmouth Road to Ashley Road, with work due to finish three days later.

The works are likely to cause significant delays, and residents will hope the resurfacing will resolve the pothole problem.

Last month it was reported that despite 10 weeks of works at the junction of Wimborne Road with the Broadway and East Howe Lane in Bournemouth the road surface remained in a poor state.

Bournemouth council's traffic manager said the contractor would carry the costs of fixing the road, which ward councillor Mark Battistini, said "could have been finished a bit better".
