TODAY'S the big day for the hundreds of students taking part in the annual Rock Challenge event at Bournemouth's Pavilion Theatre.

Teams from nine schools, some with as many as 135 pupils, are rehearsing all day before tonight's competition.

Months of hard work will come to fruition for the students, who have been involved in every aspect of their performance.

Rock Challenge aims to inspire, engage and motivate young people to make healthy and positive lifestyle choices.

Teams involved in the Bournemouth heat this year are LeAF Studio School, Corfe Hills, St Peter's, Queen Elizabeth's, Twynham, Thomas Hardye, Gryphon, Sir John Colfox and Taunton School.

Around 600 students in total will rehearse all day before performing in front of family, friends, VIPs, sponsors and a panel of industry professionals.

Rock Challenge was created to allow young people to perform live on a professional stage. The experience encourages an adrenalin-based high gained through performing, rather than using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs.

Teams will have up to eight minutes to perform their chosen theme. Each year organisers see a range of themes, from the tackling of current social issues to the retelling of real-life events or fictional pieces, with every aspect of the performance devised, designed and created by the students.

Supervising Event Manager, Sophia Campbell said: "Every school puts so much effort into their performance, the dedication from students and staff alike is fantastic to see. For many, Rock Challenge is the highlight of the school year. I can’t wait to see what 2018 brings."

Involving more than 330 schools across the country this year’s UK Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ tour is expected to reach 20,000 young people between the ages of seven and 18 years old and upwards of 38,000 audience members.
