ARMED police were involved in a stand-off with a suspected gunman for almost six hours earlier on Saturday.

Specialist firearms officers were deployed to a residential street in Moordown amid reports a woman was being held hostage by a man with a gun.

As police arrived on scene, around 7.20am, it was quickly established the woman was no longer inside the house.

However, a man remained inside the Parley Road property - shouting at officers, who had cordoned off the area, from an upstairs window.

A loaded crossbow and two weapons, believed to be imitation firearms, were later seized by officers.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at just gone 1pm on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm, affray and false imprisonment. He is currently assisting officers with enquiries.

Firefighters and paramedics remained on standby for the duration of the stand-off.

Another resident told the Echo: "I was woken up about 7.30am, and noticed police pulling up.

"Then when I drove down the road I saw all the other officers - it is just another quiet morning in Moordown."

The woman who had been inside the house is being supported by officers.

Police closed Parley Road and Malvern Road until the all clear was given.

Chief Inspector Dean O'Connor said: "The incident has now concluded and I would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while officers worked at the scene.

"We had to cordon off the area in order to deal with the situation while keeping the public safe. I am aware that this has taken quite a few hours and I would like to thank those residents directly affected by the closure.

"I am also grateful to the fire and ambulance service for their assistance.

"An investigation is now underway, which will be led by detectives from Bournemouth CID."
