GROUPS can apply for a share of £1.7 million funding to enhance the environment around a massive Purbeck oil field.

Funds totalling £1.7million have been allocated to improve the landscape around Wytch Farm, which is close to Corfe Castle and is the largest onshore oil field in western Europe.

Launched earlier this January, the Wytch Farm Landscape and Access Enhancement Fund is open for applications from landowners, conservation and community groups or individuals.

It has been established specifically for projects that will help to enhance the local landscape and moderate the impacts of the oil field on the local landscape, wildlife and rights of way.

The initiative has received support from the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Dorset County Council, Natural England and oil field operator Perenco UK.

Dorset County Council natural and built environment cabinet member Cllr Daryl Turner said: "We are really excited that this fund is open for applications.

"Now, landowners, conservation and community groups or individuals can all apply; projects funded must meet the criteria of enhancing the landscape, biodiversity or access within the defined boundaries of the scheme."

The funds have been made available by Perenco as part of a planning application to extend the working life of the oilfield by a further 20 years.

Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty's Alison Turnock said: "We’re appealing to anyone who may have ideas on how to strengthen the character of the surrounding landscape, enhance the wildlife or improve the rights of way.

"For example, it would be great if we got an application to provide car-free access which would help to conserve tranquillity in the area."

Completed applications must be in by the end of February to be assessed by a panel of experts, including a representative from Perenco, in March. It is expected that there will be further opportunities to apply for funds later in the year.

Projects must be located within certain priority areas near to the oil field infrastructure
