PLANS to devise a strategy for the future of the Christchurch coast have been shelved - after the public urged the council not to change anything.

A report to Wednesday's community committee at Christchurch council asks for the results of the consultation to be just noted, partly due to the uncertainty over the reorganisation of Dorset councils.

The main concern raised during the consultation was the initial decision not to repair the zig zag at Highcliffe Castle beach.

The defunct plans to place overnight beach huts at the beauty spot as part of a television show was also raised.

The council says a number of "quick wins" may be possible to implement quickly, including signage, enforcement of existing 'dogs on leads' bylaws, more seats and a policy for use on drones.

Other 'themes' identified in the comments, include leaving things as they are, no more beach huts, improved access to the beach, better facilities and infrastructure and protection for the natural environment.

The report said: "Whilst there is clearly significant support for 'no change' it is difficult to produce a strategy based on not doing anything.

"Decisions have been made by the council in the past which state that there will be more beach huts built in certain areas.

"Given the evident strength of feeling against the delivery of more beach huts from the community engagement exercise, commitment should be given through this report to further community engagement on the extent, location and scale of any specific proposals which come forward in the future."

Regarding LGR, it says it is important that the authorities involved do not compromise the ability of any future authority to act, or commit a future authority to specific policies or expenditure.

Despite the overall strategy likely to be postponed, the council are proposing a review of seats, bins, signage and other infrastructure.

They also want to work more closely with the Mudeford Sandbank Beach Hut Association.

And they plan to carry out further consultation on projects which already have funding approval including the information hub at Highcliffe and beach huts agreed by council committee.

The responses will form the basis of any future proposals.
