NEW Forest councillors have paid tribute to a former colleague who died earlier this month.

Sophie Beeton, who represented the Milford ward, was first elected to the district council at a by-election on July 19, 2012.

She was portfolio holder for environment from May 18, 2015, until she tendered her resignation late in 2017. She had been ill for some time and was receiving treatment at Southampton General Hospital, before going to St George’s Hospital in Milford-on-Sea.

Ms Beeton died on January 12.

Cllr Barry Rickman said: "As leader of the council I worked closely with Sophie and will miss her terribly, both for her friendship and for her work as a valued member of my cabinet. My thoughts are with the family."

Council chairman Christine Ward said Ms Beeton was "a bright and caring soul who it was my pleasure to serve alongside".

"We will remember her for her willingness to get involved, and for her infectious enthusiasm. My deepest sympathies go out to Sophie’s family."

Chief executive Bob Jackson said: "I’m greatly saddened that Cllr Sophie Beeton has lost her battle with her illness.

"On behalf of employees here at the council who were privileged to work alongside Sophie, I would like to express our sincere condolences."

The council lowered its flag as a mark of respect.
