WALKERS are being put in danger by poachers using firearms, police have warned.
As reported in the Daily Echo, reports of deer, pheasant and game poaching has increased across Dorset in recent months.
Police in Purbeck say the crime causes "significant damage".
"The methods used by the perpetrators not only causes harm and distress to the animal, but can also damage farm gateways, crops and hedges," a spokesperson said.
"Perpetrators target and steal pheasants which massively impacts estates which run pheasant pursuits.
"This can end their pheasant season and place livelihoods in jeopardy
"Those committing rural crime also often carry firearms.
"This poses an obvious danger to people working on farm and estate land, along with those lawfully using rights of way."
Anyone who spots a poacher should not attempt to approach the individual, but immediately call 999. All other incidents should be reported by visiting dorset.police.uk or by calling 101.
