BURGLARS smashed their way into a Bournemouth café before making off with loose change.

The Cherries Café on Curzon Road, Springbourne, was broken into sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Owner Mandy Norris said: “Our next-door neighbour texted my sister and she called me and I shot straight there.

“We saw the windows smashed and the other one was open, they’d come in through the kitchen.

“They took around £20 in loose change.

“We opened the café late in the afternoon but we missed the breakfast and lunch trade and it really affects us as we’re a small business.”

The café, which was previously known as The Curzon Diner and has been running for 50 years, was targeted by burglars when Mandy and her sister first took it on nine years ago.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 8.11am on 11 January 2018 to reports of a burglary that had occurred sometime between 3pm on 10 January and 8.10am on 11 January at Cherries café in Curzon Road in Bournemouth.

“Offenders smashed their way into the premises and stole a small quantity of change.”

“No arrests have been made and enquiries are underway, including CCTV.”

Police are also investigating a break-in at Tops Day Nursery in Wolverton Road which occurred sometime between 9am on Wednesday and 6.20am on Thursday.

It was reported that windows had been smashed and an untidy search was carried out.

No cash was left on the premises and it is not believed anything was taken.

No arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for Hadland Care Group said: “Nursery staff discovered there had been a break in on Thursday morning when they arrived to open the nursery, noticing a smashed window and glass on the floor.

“There was no damage to the children’s rooms and resources, it was mainly the office that had been the intruders focus.”

The spokesperson added: “Tops Day Nurseries do not keep any cash onsite so luckily nothing was taken. “

Mandy said she was told by forensics officers that they believe the person who carried out the burglary at the cafe is the same person who raided Tops Day Nursery because they shared the same footprint.

There are also reports of other businesses being targeted in the West Howe area on the same night.
