HAVE YOU ever worked for Scottish and Southern Electric? If so, the company needs you - to help it celebrate its 70th anniversary year.

SSE Head of Heritage, Gillian O’Reilly, wants to speak to anyone who would like to share their memories from the early days of the Southern Electricity Board through its transition to today’s SSEN.

“The year ahead is important as SSEN’s history is part of central southern England’s history too, and the development of the regions and communities it has served over the past 70 years has helped to shape the company we know today," she said.

“We want to hear from those who experienced this first hand, so if you worked with the company between the 1940s and 1980s, or if you lived in a community near a construction project, I would love to hear from you," said Gillian.

The company is hoping to track down images from proud homeowners following an installation in their home, or from those who photographed site work, on sub-stations or pylons, or clearing and repair work following the Great Storm or the Big Freeze during the winter of 1962-63.

They are especially keen to trace the men featured in these two images, which is of repairs after the 1987 storm, and sub-station work on Brownsea Island.

The company is also hoping to learn about how people's work or home life changed because of better access to electricity during these times. "We'd love to see old photos or film footage of any kind,” said Gillian.
