CHRISTCHURCH'S new primary school is on target to open next summer.

Building works at the site off Marsh Lane are on target, contractors confirm, and it is expected to be completed by next spring.

Contractors, Morgan Sindall, have also filmed a timelapse video showing the £7million building works in progress.

With 14 classrooms, a large hall, learning resource area, studio and practical area and other facilities, the video documents the site being cleared and buildings going up.

In August, an extension for the temporary school at Twynham was applied for.

On the planning application for the extension, a condition for the current planning permission to be varied until September 2018 was applied for.

A spokesperson for Dorset County Council said at this stage the school would be open by September 2018, but depending on circumstances, it could be open at the end of the summer term.

Jon Daines, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: "This is an important project which will play a key role in helping to meet the rising demand for primary school places in Dorset.

"It’s great to have the time-lapse video footage to share the project journey with the wider community and provide such a dynamic record of the work that has been delivered to date.

"We’re delighted to be making such positive progress on this scheme and we’ve enjoyed working closely with the wider project team to deliver real efficiencies.

"We look forward to handing over the scheme early next year."

Concerned residents objecting to the site during the proposal stage said roads around the school would not cope with the additional traffic.

Road humps, speed 'cushions' and wider pedestrian junctions were part of the measures brought in by county engineers.

They included two road humps in Marsh Lane, one 'raised table' type hump at the school entrance as well as speed cushions in Suffolk Avenue, Walcott Avenue and Bronte Avenue at the junctions with Marsh Lane.

There will also be the installation of widened pedestrian crossings with 'no waiting at any time' parking restrictions.
