A CRICKETER is setting out to complete a marathon batting challenge to help raise money for a cause which has gripped the Dorset cricket scene.

From 10am this morning until 10am on Thursday, Craig Rochford, who plays for social Sunday team Talbot Cricket Club, is attempting to spend 24 hours consecutively in the nets.

The challenge takes place in the Dorset Cricket Centre at Hurn Bridge Sports Ground on Avon Causeway.

Craig is raising money for Rob Franks, who is due to have his leg amputated.

A combination of problems, including a tumour and a fracture that will never heal, means amputation is the only way of relieving the crippling pain he has suffered for three years.

Last month Rob reached the required £15,000 for his operation, but more money is needed for post-surgery treatment such as physio.

"I met Rob through cricket because he used to coach my son," Craig said.

"The cricket community has really pulled together for him and it would great to raise a lot of money to help him.

"I have always wanted to give the 24-hour net challenge a go, but to be able to do it for such a good cause makes it even more worthwhile."

Around 30 people have signed up to bowl to Craig, with a bowling machine on hand to do its fair share.
