PLANS to build a second tier of beach huts on top of an existing block of huts at Canford Cliffs have been withdrawn.

The proposals for 12 new beach huts formed part of Borough of Poole’s now £6.6 million scheme to improve the town’s seafront.

Keith Gould, of Asplan Associates, the agents acting on behalf of the council, wrote a letter to the planning manager to request to withdraw the planning application.

The reasons for the withdrawal were not stated, but Mr Gould said a revised application for another scheme would be re-submitted “in the next few months”.

The abandoned scheme, which was submitted during the summer, would have seen a first floor extension built on top of an existing beach hut block at Canford Cliffs near to the footpath which links Chaddesley Glen to the beach.

As well as the 12 additional huts, the plans included an external walkway and staircase to the existing block, known as block eight.

The block of huts to the west of the site is already two-storeys.

As part of the borough’s seafront plans six new huts have already been constructed in Sandbanks.

The scheme will see 145 new huts built, 147 dated huts rebuilt and 28 revamped across the borough’s beaches.

Four are set to be built at Flaghead, 94 at Canford Cliff West, 37 at Canford Cliff East and four at Branksome Dene.

Five different new hut sizes and types are planned, and the scheme also proposes the enhancement of public facilities such as a new café and improved accessibility and toilets.

The scheme was revised last year due to concerns with cliff stability at Canford Cliffs following a landslip at Bournemouth’s East Cliff in April, which prompted Borough of Poole to carry out its own assessment of seafront cliffs.

And in November last year Borough of Poole started submitting planning applications for the new beach huts.

The improvements are being implemented to support delivery of the council’s Supplementary Planning Document, Sustaining Poole’s Seafront, which sets out how the borough plans to conserve, improve and invest in Poole’s seafront and beaches.
