A son has been left distraught after an ornament was stolen from his mother’s grave in a callous theft.

Grant Mulry, from Burton Bradstock, was devastated when he made the discovery on visiting his mother’s grave in Weymouth Avenue cemetery in Dorchester.

Mr Mulry had placed the angel ornament on his mother’s grave at Christmas time last year, but when he returned to pay her a visit it had gone.

He said: “It’s just disgusting really.

“When people die they should be left to rest in peace, it’s sad that someone had to stoop that low to steal from someone’s grave.

“It hadn’t been there that long.

"When it was stolen there was some forever flowers and a few other little bits, but she hasn’t got a proper headstone yet.”

Mr Mulry, 56, is in a wheelchair due to suffering with scoliosis of his spine.

He needs daily support and can’t go out on his own to look for the ornament.

He added: “I’ve put the message out there, and friends and family have been in touch and have been keeping their eyes open which is nice. It’s good to have that support.

“One of my friends even offered a £500 reward for the person that found it.

“There’s some good people out there.

“It’s just very upsetting, when someone passes away you just leave them alone. It’s still a very emotional and painful time.”

The cemetery in Dorchester is not covered by CCTV, and Mr Mulry says he doesn’t believe anyone in buildings nearby would have been in a position to witness the theft.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said the theft was reported to them but they were unable to determine an exact date of when it occurred.

They said: “We will always consider any information reported and the reference number will help us connect it to the incident.”

Any information can be reported to police on 101 quoting crime number 55170142943.
