Hundreds of residents flocked to Weymouth Pavilion to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in conflicts.

The Festival of Remembrance took place on Sunday, October 29 and saw families travel from across the county to pay their respects at what has been called “The only event of its kind in Dorset.”

The event was organised by the Royal British Legion, who help oversee Dorset’s Poppy Appeal.

This year the theme of the festival was passing the baton of remembrance to younger generations and county RBL chairman Jerry Nunn was the first to pass the baton at the event.

Visitors were treated to a number of performances from The Decadettes, the Bovington Military Wives Choir, Bournemouth Youth Marching Band and the Weymouth Concert Brass. As well as performances from Let’s Dance, St Osmund’s School Players and the St John’s School Choir.

In the second half of the festival poppies were dropped on the stage filling the pavilion with a stunning sea of red, and emotional reflections were given.

RBL community fundraiser for Dorset Ian Jarvis said the performers did everyone proud.

He added: “The festival went really well with cracking performances that really entertained, from the seasoned performers to the smallest of mites they all did us proud. As the only event of its kind in Dorset. Good write-ups beforehand meant that those taking part were performing to a very good crowd who loved every minute of it.”

Mr Jarvis also praised the festival’s musical director, Anna-Maria Geare, who helped to organise the event.

He said: “When I came into the job six years ago I wanted to bring a festival of remembrance back to Dorset. I was working with Anna-Maria and said I would like to hold a Festival of Remembrance and due to her connections, it has happened.

“It was my idea but she helped turn it into a reality. She has been a front of all knowledge and has been fantastic. We are already booked for next year.”
