A POOLE schoolgirl has been chosen as the lucky winner of a national Halloween costume competition organised by Tesco.

Gabrielle Whitehead, 10, put pen to paper to design ‘Skeleton Mermaid’, which is now available in-store and online as part of the supermarket's Halloween range.

Gabrielle beat scores of other hopefuls from across the UK with her Skeleton Mermaid design.

The prize winning costume features a glittery front panel, skeletal tail, lacy sleeves, and is purple and turquoise in colour.

The Broadstone Middle School student has been creative from a very young age, and would like to work in the arts when she grows up.

She created her own mermaid costume at home using her mum's old shirt and paint.

Her mum Becky Whitehead said: “Winning the Tesco Halloween costume competition has been so exciting for Gabrielle – she’s loved seeing her drawing turn into a real outfit.

"She is obsessed with mermaids and jumped at the chance to enter and create her very own spooky mermaid design. All of her friends are very proud that her Skeleton Mermaid is in Tesco supermarkets.”
