OWNERS of thatched properties across Dorset are being urged to take steps to avoid fire risk this winter.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said fires at thatched properties are difficult to tackle and are often caused by transfer of heat from the chimney to the thatch.
Station Manager, Jason Rogers said: "Thatched properties are at greater risk of a fire developing due to the materials used in its construction. I would recommend that homeowners should take full advantage of any steps that can be taken to reduce these risks."
Home owners are advised to have chimneys inspected and swept regularly and to fit bird guards to deer birds from nesting in chimneys.
They are also urged to insulate the chimney flue and to ensure they have smoke alarms on every floor.
