A gas leak has forced the emergency closure of roads in Purbeck this afternoon.

Police received a report of a gas leak in Dorchester Road, Wool, at 12.45pm.

The gas board and fire service have also been alerted.

A 60 metre exclusion zone has been put in place.

Road closures are also in place between the Burton Cross roundabout and the roundabout at the junction with Tout Hill.

East Burton Road has also been closed.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Hannah Brett, speaking for SGN, said: "We were called to Wareham Road in Wool earlier this afternoon after our gas governor was damaged by a third party.

"The governor is an above-ground installation that regulates the gas pressure in our network.

"Our engineers have now stopped the leak and made the area safe.

"To ensure the safety of the public, the A352 was closed by the emergency services. The road is due to reopen again shortly."
